What is Crime Stoppers?

Crime Stoppers is a non-profit organization that relies on help and co-operation from the community, law enforcement, and media. Since 1976, Crime Stoppers has been working with public volunteers to gather information about crimes and criminals. Crime Stoppers does not use tax dollars, and the program relies on money from private and public sectors to pay cash rewards for tip information. It is through contributions and fundraisers that rewards are available.

How does Crime Stoppers work?

People with knowledge about crimes that have occurred can call a hotline 1 (800) 222-TIPS, use the P3 app, or log into the Crime Stoppers website, and provide crime tip information. If the information leads to an arrest, the tipster is eligible to receive a reward up to $1000.

How do you receive your reward?

When you call back with your unique and private code number, we will let you know if your tip helped law enforcement arrest or charge a felony suspect/fugitive. If it did, we will give you instructions to go to a specific location on a certain date to pick up your cash reward. You will not be asked to show an ID or report the money to anyone.

How does the tipster remain anonymous?

Phone calls are never recorded, and there is no Caller ID. Tipster’s identities are encrypted; a private code is given to use when calling the Crime Stopper’s hotline for an update on the tip status.

The purpose of Crime Stoppers is to make communities safer, and support from the public, law enforcement, media, and donors helps make that possible. With tips and information from the public, Crime Stoppers gives you the opportunity to assist in protecting McDonough County and creating a better place to live.
